The profile of pragmatic language impairments in children with ADHD: A systematic review

Abstract This systematic review synthesizes the empirical literature examining pragmatic language in children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Using a taxonomy of language, we compared profiles ADHD to those typically developing (TD) and autism. Three databases were searched up October 2019: PsychInfo; PubMed; CSA Linguistics Language Behavior Abstracts. We included 34 studies reporting on 2,845 (ADHD = 1,407; TD 1,058; autism 380). Quality risk bias assessments sample size representativeness; measure reliability validity; missing data management. Children found have higher rates difficulties than their peers. Specific identified inappropriate initiation, presupposition, social discourse, narrative coherence. appear differ from degree impairments. General skills contribute to, but do not explain, samples ADHD. Though extant evidence is limited, preliminary profile impairments indicated. supports call for evidence-based interventions that include training.
